Timeless Wisdom

I had the great opportunity to spend a day with the legendary UCLA men's basketball coach, John Wooden.  He gave me a card that I keep in my wallet.  The card includes wisdom passed to Coach Wooden by his father Joshua.  Here are two parts of that timeless wisdom.

Never Lie
Never Cheat
Never Steal
TWO SETS OF THREES
Don't Whine
Don't Complain
Don't Make Excuses

7-Point Creed
1. Be true to yourself.
2. Help others.
3. Make each day your masterpiece.
4. Drink deeply from good books.
5. Make friendship a fine art.
6. Build shelter against a rainy day.
7. Pray for guidance and counsel and give thanks for your blessings every day.
Writing Notes

In today's email centric world the handwritten note has become a lost art.  As part of the Life Planning days that I lead, I provide note cards and envelopes so attendees can write handwritten notes during their reflection time.

There are numerous reasons for writing a handwritten note to someone.  Some of the reasons include sayings such as:

Thank you
I love you
I am sorry
Do you remember...
I am thinking about you
I miss you
I am looking forward to...

As an action plan of today's newsletter I challenge you to write handwritten notes to those people in your life who you need and/or want to touch.

In my experience a handwritten note is very powerful.
10 Benefits of a Recession

1. It causes you to get more creative.
2. It forces you to make tough decisions.
3. It thins out the competition.
4. It makes you realize you can't take anything or anyone for granted.
5. It reminds you that real wealth isn't in the stuff you own.
6. It fosters out-of-the-box thinking.
7. It makes it easier to abandon business-as-usual.
8. It brings you back to the basics.
9. It accelerates change.
10. It causes you to be less wasteful.
Quotes: I have two quotes for you this month.  At a time in our history where so many are struggling financially, I offer these quotes as hope for tomorrow.

 Persistence
"The prizes of life are at the end of each journey,
Not near the beginning;
And it is not given to me to know how many
Steps are necessary in order to reach my goal.
Failure I may still encounter at the thousandth step,
Yet success hides behind the next bend in the road.
Never will I know how close it lies
Unless I turn the corner...
I will persist until I succeed."
-Og Mandino

On the February 13th edition of the ABC's 20/20, I heard the following quote,

"Measure a man's greatness by how much it takes to discourage him.

"I Am" by Michael Tolcher is a CD that debuted in 2004.  This CD is a classic!  Michael is a gifted, alternative, Georgia-bred singer and song writer whose way with guitar-driven rock vocals is anthemic poetry.  The songs are powerful, reflective and thought provoking.

My two favorite songs on the CD are "Sooner or Later" and "Kings in Castles."

The CD is great but Michael's live show is even better.  Go see him if you get the opportunity.
What I have recently read.

"The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch and Jeff Zaslow goes beyond the now famous lecture to inspire us all to live each day of our lives with purpose and joy.

"We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand."  -Randy Pausch

A lot of professors give talks titled "The Last Lecture."  Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them.  And while they speak, audiences can't help but mull the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance?  If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our LEGACY?

When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Melon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer.  But the lecture he gave - "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" - wasn't about dying.  It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have ...and you may find one day that you have less than you think").  It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe.  It was about living.

In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form.  It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.
"Tdaunted Courage" by Stephen Ambrose is the
