John Wooden's 12 Lessons in Leadership

As many of you know legendary Coach John Wooden is one of my leadership and life role models.  I was fortunate to have his grandson-in-law, Gary Bernstein, work at my firm for several years.  Gary introduced me to Coach and we shared some very memorable and valuable time together in his living room.  He is an amazing person and a great role model.

Coach Wooden's Lessons in Leadership list was intended to be for kids.  However, the more I read it, the more how I see how it applies to life and business for kids and adults.

1. Good values attract good people.

2. Love is the most powerful four-letter-word.

3. Call yourself a teacher.

4. Emotion is your enemy.

5. It takes 10 hands to make a basket.

6. Little things make big things happen.

7. Make each day your masterpiece.

8. The carrot is mightier than a stick.

9. Make greatness attainable by all.

10. Seek significant change.

11. Don't look at the scoreboard.

12. Adversity is your asset.

As I read the 12 lessons, I am tempted to comment on how each of the 12 applies to me or to life and leadership.  However, after some reflection, I have chosen to leave the meaning of each of the 12 up to you and to your own interpretation.

The Mayonnaise Jar

When things in your life and business seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day isn't enough; remember the mayonnaise jar.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him...

When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and started to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full.  They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured it into the jar.  He shook the jar lightly.  The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full.  They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.  Of course, the sand filled up everything else.  He asked once more if the jar was full.  The students responded with a unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the remaining empty space between the sand.  The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life."

The golf balls are the important things (family, children, spouse, friends, passions etc...).  Things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the things that matter like your career, house and car.

The sand is everything else (the small stuff).

"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.  The same goes for life.  If you spend all of your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you."

So...

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.  There will always be time to clean the house and fix the dripping tap.

"Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter.  Set your priorities.  The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and asked what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked."

"It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

The lyrics, song writing and performing style of David Gray inspires me to reflect on my life and how powerful our effect is on others lives. The music is very deep and highly relatable.  His new CD is called Draw The Line.  I highly recommend this CD and all of David's music.

Quotation

"Keeping my mind on a better life.

Where happiness is only a heartbeat away.

Paradise, can it be all I heard it was?

I close my eyes and maybe I'm already there."
