Desiderata by Max Ehrmann

A dear friend sent me this and through some of my most painful periods I have read and re-read this piece.  I hope as you read this you feel the power and the beauty that I do when I read it.  Needless to say, I also hope this it will give you perspective and clarity.

Go Placidly amid the noise and the haste,

and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender,

be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly;

and listen to others,

even to the dull and the ignorant;

they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons;

they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,

you may become vain or bitter.

for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;

it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,

for the world is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;

many persons strive for high ideals,

and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.  Especially do not feign affection.

Neither be cynical about love,

for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,

it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,

gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nature strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.

But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,

be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe

no less than the trees and the stars;

you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you,

no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,

whatever you conceive Him to be.

And whatever your labors and aspirations,

in the noisy confusion of life,

keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,

it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful.  Strive to be happy.

"The Bucket List"

One of my favorite movies is "The Bucket List" with Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson.  It is a movie about friendship, enjoying life and finding out what the true meaning of life is.

In a scene from the film the two main characters are sitting on a pyramid in Egypt and one asks the other the following questions;

1. Have you found joy in your life?

2. Has your life brought joy to others?

These are amazing questions that I ask myself and today I ask you to reflect on these questions.  I hope the answer is yes to both.  If not, today is the start of a new opportunity to answer yes to both of these questions.

Book and Music Recommendation

Foo Fighters have recently released a new CD called "Wasting Light."  The band recorded this CD in Dave Grohl's house.  There are no fancy recording tricks and overlays that are so commonly utilized in today's music.  This is an old school raw and real rock record.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Emotional Intelligence has been a life changing book for me!  The study of EI taught me about the power of what I say and do and how it affects other people.  We are all having such an enormous impact (sometimes positive and sometimes negative) on so many people.  We are aware of some of the people we impact and others we don't know we are impacting them.

EI has been the single most valuable life and business tool I have learned.  I am very passionate about its power to make the world a better place to live through increasing the amount of grace we have for other people.  Finally the power of the book identifies the need to increase our self-awareness so that our actions and behaviors can be positive and thus lead to results that are productive and powerful for ourselves and the people we interact with.

Enjoy the read!

Quotation

"Today can be a turning point in your ongoing process of change.  Although there may not be much happening in your outer world, there's a lot of movement on the inside where no one else can see.  You sense that this isn't just another routine day, even if you don't share your realization with anyone else in the meantime, keep showing up and doing what others expect.  Maintaining enough space so that you can continue your important work within."
