A Father's Influence on their Children

 As a father of soon to be nine-year-old boy/girl twins in the third grade, I reflect quite often on the role and impact I am having on my children.  For me there is nothing more important than the responsibility I have to my children.  They are looking to me in so many ways.  They are creating a belief system about parents, about father's and in many ways about adults based on what I say and do and how it impacts them and their lives.

As I reflect on my own childhood, there was good, bad and ugly as I describe in my book, Heart Leader.  In the end, I believe my parents did the best they could with the tools that they had at the time and most importantly I KNOW they loved me with all of their heart and soul.  To this day, my parents are a huge part of my life and the lives of my children.

As a 45 year old man, I am still trying to emulate the positive characteristics my father has consistently exhibited over the past 45 years.  They include; loyalty, integrity, thinking before he speaks, treating everyone he meets and knows with respect, not just hearing but listening when people speak to him, excellent communication skills and thinking through important decisions.  To this day, he is my role model for what a good man is.

My Daughter

I am keenly aware that every man that my daughter will have a relationship with for the rest of her life will be measured in many ways against me and the type of man that I am.  That fact is in the front of my mind every minute we are together.  I believe much of her beliefs are rooted in what she hears, sees and feels from me during these developmental years of her life. 

As a father I committed to being the best man I can be for her and for the health of her future relationships.

My Son

As it was and is with my father, I serve as a role model to my son.  I am trying hard to exhibit the traits that my father has so consistently lived his life with (listed above).  The way I live my life and the actions and behaviors I demonstrate to him will stay with him for life. 

As a father I am committed to being the best man I can be for him and the man he is becoming.

The Man in the Arena by Theodore Roosevelt

On April 23, 1910 Theodore Roosevelt delivered a speech called "Citizenship In A Republic."  It is a very powerful speech.  There is a piece of this speech called "The Man in the Arena."  During these difficult times, it is vital for us to read and re-read this piece because if we are in the battle, then we face both great challenges and great victories.  For those of us who are in the arena every day, this is for you;

"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."

Book and Music Recommendation

Counting Crows is my favorite band.  When I listen to their entire catalog of music, song after song has lyrical and musical depth and soul.  The live CD that I am recommending this month is an example of some of their most powerful music.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
