12 Lessons in Leadership

On October 14th, legendary UCLA basketball coach, John Wooden celebrated his 99th birthday.  I have had the good fortune to have met Coach Wooden and spend time with him at his home.  He is an extraordinary man!  This newsletter is a tribute to him and his legacy.

Below are Wooden's 12 Lessons in Leadership

  1. Good values attract good people.

  2. Love is the most powerful four-letter word.

  3. Call yourself a teacher.

  4. Emotion is your enemy.

  5. It takes 10 hands to make a basket.

  6. Little things make big things happen.

  7. Make each day your masterpiece.

  8. The carrot is mightier than a stick.

  9. Make greatness attainable by ALL.

10. Seek significant change.

11. Don't look at the scoreboard.

12. Adversity is your asset.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving can be a magical time of year.  It can also be a lonely time.  If you are a leader of people (employees, managers, your children, an association etc...), you have the opportunity to have a positive impact on those you lead and influence.  Share the celebration of Thanksgiving and all of the gifts that we have to be grateful for with the people in your life.

Action plan: Search out those who don't have a place to go for Thanksgiving and invite them into your home.  No one should be alone on Thanksgiving.

Bonus action plan: Go around your Thanksgiving table and ask each person to talk about the person that has had the most positive influence on their life and why.

Book and Music Recommendation

Instead of a book recommendation I thought I could honor Coach Wooden and the celebration of his birthday by sharing his Pyramid of Success and encouraging you to get a detailed copy of the pyramid and spend some time studying the philosophy of a great teacher, leader and mentor.

If you are a leader or an influencer, and that is every one of us, there are a lot of tremendous lessons that can be learned from Coach Wooden through the Pyramid of Success and his books.

Seek out the wisdom of Coach Wooden and pay it forward to those you lead and love.
